The SAFER Act, a bipartisan bill, ensures better allocation of federal funds for the purpose of processing rape kits. Rep. Ted Poe (R-TX), explains the rationale behind the bill:
“As a former judge, the DNA evidence is pretty conclusive,” Poe said. “It’s better than fingerprints. It’s better than blood samples. There’s no two people with same DNA, so it’s excellent evidence to convict and also release individuals that are innocent.”
With an estimated 400,000 untested rape kits nationwide, this sounds like a pretty good idea.
